You were involved in an auto accident. At first you felt okay, only some minor back pain, but as the days and weeks went by you started noticing other symptoms. You finally decide to get things checked out and receive a diagnosis of spinal stenosis. What it is and what could this mean for your future?

Numerous Florida residents who suffer injuries in car accidents suffer back injuries. Some of these injuries are minor and others can have life-long consequences. Spinal stenosis is a medical issue that may not seem serious right away, but symptoms can progress over time causing serious health problems.

What is spinal stenosis?

Your spine does a lot for your body. Not only does it give your body structure and stability, it houses nerves that control your ability to move and feel various sensations. Within your spine are spaces, these spaces give cushion and protect the nerves. Spinal stenosis occurs when the spaces narrow and the nerves no longer have the room they need.

What causes it and what are the symptoms?

There are a number of things that can cause spinal stenosis. Some of them include:

  • Bone spurs
  • Herniated disks
  • Bulging ligaments
  • Tumors
  • Spinal fractures
  • Dislocated vertebrae

The last two in this list are often the result of injuries suffered in car or other types of accidents.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis can vary per individual. Some people may not notice anything is wrong right away. Others may experience tingling in the extremities, weakness, neck pain, back pain, bowel/bladder dysfunction and balance issues. Without treatment, symptoms will persist and can make living one’s life a challenge.

Treatment

Medical providers can diagnose spinal stenosis with imaging tests, such as X-rays, MRIs or CT scans. If you receive a positive diagnoses, your care team will create a treatment plan to fit your needs. In severe cases, surgery may be required. In other cases, medication and physical therapy may be sufficient. Some people may even find relief utilizing alternative medicine treatments, such as acupuncture, massage therapy or chiropractic adjustments.

If, in the days, weeks or even months after the car accident, you experience symptoms of a back injury — whether it be spinal stenosis or something else, — it is wise to seek medical attention. If it turns out that your injury is related to the event and the other driver was responsible for causing the crash, you may have the legal right to seek compensation for any losses you’ve experienced because of it.
