A car crash is always an upsetting event. If the accident involves the use of drugs or alcohol, it only complicates the tragedy. This is the case, police say, in a recent accident that killed one young Florida woman and injured another. Drunk driving is being blamed for the incident.

The car accident happened just before 2 a.m. on a recent late night. Two women were headed south on a street when they were struck by an SUV in an intersection. The right side of the car sustained most of the damage, and the passenger, a 26-year-old woman, died on the scene. The driver of the car, the woman’s 24-year-old friend, was injured and reportedly will be in recovery for the next two to three months.

The driver of the SUV that hit them has been arrested and charged with DUI homicide, DUI serious injury and underage possession of alcohol. The Florida Highway Patrol alleges that the 20-year-old man was drinking and that there was an open can of beer in his center console. They also say that he smelled of alcohol, and had balance issues. He was allegedly not wearing a seat belt, though both women in the other car were. He is currently being held on bond and awaiting a court appearance.

An event like this one can have a ripple effect across an accused driver’s life. If convicted, a driver could face fines, jail time and even a civil claim for monetary damages. Anyone here in Florida who has been accused of drunk driving may wish to consult with a legal professional who has experience handling DUI cases. Doing so may result in as favorable an outcome as possible in a situation that may seem bleak at the outset.
