Even after you and your partner decide to get divorced, you are still committed to the well-being of your children. To maintain the relationships you have with your children, you and your former partner may have decided to co-parent.

Although co-parenting likely provides benefits for both you and your children, it can still present challenges. By taking certain steps to improve your co-parenting arrangement, you can make things easier on you, your ex and your children.

Make communication a priority

Open and honest communication between co-parents is important. Maintain a respectful tone and discuss important matters face-to-face or through a clear written channel. Ensure you and your ex are on the same page when it comes to decisions about your children’s education, health and extracurricular activities.

Stay consistent

Stay consistent with parenting styles, rules and routines across both households. Children thrive on predictability, and having a similar structure in both homes can provide stability and reduce confusion for your children.

Put your children first

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that 689,308 couples divorced or annulled their marriages in 2021, and many of these couples with children continued to put their children first. Always prioritize your children’s needs over personal differences or conflicts and make decisions based on what is in the best interests of your children.

Create a co-parenting plan

Develop a co-parenting plan that outlines your responsibilities and expectations. This plan can include visitation schedules, holidays and communication guidelines. A well-structured plan can help reduce misunderstandings and conflicts.

Stay flexible

Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes plans need to change. When needed, be flexible about your co-parenting arrangement and accommodating towards your former spouse’s schedule.

Respect your ex’s boundaries

Respect your ex’s personal boundaries and privacy. Avoid prying into his or her personal life or making disparaging remarks about him or her in front of your children.

Maintain a positive attitude and mindset throughout your co-parenting journey. Focus on the benefits of your children having two loving and involved parents in their lives.
